Communicating Downtown and What PCA Can Do To Make Downtown Better

September 20, 2012

Since PCA was formed, almost 30 years ago, never has there been as much enthusiasm about Downtown Phoenix as there is today!

On September 18th, Sherman & Howard hosted PCA’s open house,  ”Communicating Downtown Phoenix,” inviting members and others to join us to brainstorm about our next steps to make Downtown Phoenix the best it can be.

As many know, soon a new downtown organization will be formed in Phoenix to help better actualize the many moving parts that comprise Downtown Phoenix.  We are excited about this.

PCA invited two outstanding students from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications to assist us in recording the event. We want to thank Ameilia Goe and Cydney McFarland. Please connect to the link for her article in the Downtown Devilhttp://downtowndevil.com/2012/09/19/30521/phoenix-community-alliance-downtown-business-community/ .

Amelia also went out on the street to ask our Downtowners at large for their input. More to come on that!

We want your input too. Please let us know what you think. (See below for some questions that may help.)

What Can We Do to Make Downtown Better?

Our attendees came up with some answers that we have divided into three basic categories Places, Spaces and Faces. It was there thought that PCA needs to concentrate equally upon three aspects of Downtown

DOWNTOWN NEEDS MORE

PLACES – SPACES – FACES

TO DOWNTOWN PHOENIX

 PLACES

  • Focus on Residential Development – Downtown Needs More and a Variety of Residential Development
  • Focus on the Warehouse District – Let’s build the District that offers more entertainment, art galleries and bars
  • Add a the “Ferris Wheel” to Hance Park
  • Focus on Non-Ticketed Events – Let’s bring more non-ticketed venues, places where you just drop in

SPACES

  • Focus on Creating a Better Walking Environment that connects
  • Focus on Small Gathering Places so people stay Downtown
  • Create a Family Friendly Downtown
  • Create attractors in outside spaces (permanent & temporary) – Flower Vendors – Book Fairs – Street Entertainment
  • Make Downtown More Walkable
  • Assure Continuity for connectivity by creating temporary events with music, artwalks, add more trees

FACES

  • Focus on more events – especially Foodie Events
  • Create a Bottom Up Steering Committee
  • Focus on more programming at existing facilities, like Civic Space Park i.e., for that park…Create planning activities (use chalk on the sidewalk to plan) that engage the entire community for weekend planning events
  • Create a Master Plan for Downtown – A Downtown Vision
  • Create a Mentoring Program for New Ideas
  • Help People through the City Development – new business process
  • Raise Funds to Finance New Ideas
  • Create a subcommittee comprised of students to develop a plan where Art & Architecture Come Together
  • Create a Student Think Tank Program
  • Attract greater diversity in PCA including young people and more grassroots organizations

GUEST BLOG by Larry Lazarus

December 7, 2011

Phoenix Community Alliance’s very own “Chief Culinary Officer” Larry Lazarus went around and dined at three local gems here in Phoenix and took the time to write a review for each restaurant.  Barrio Café, Breadfruit, and Gallo Blanco each bring a unique flavor toPhoenix and since reading Larry’s review, the team at PCA has become incredibly hungry.  Is it time for lunch yet?

Taste of the Town – Downtown that is…
by: Larry Lazarus (Not just a zoning attorney)

Barrio Café

Barrio has excited our pallets with its “Comida Chingona.” Chef Silvana’s impressive and original southern Mexico cuisine is fiercely distinctive in flavor.  Guacamole Casero tableside is unique! Pomegranate seeds not only give it a pop of color, but an impressive sensation in your taste buds.  The Red Pepper Soup is the best I have ever had.  Enchiladas Del Mar – the shrimp, scallops and crab work in concert on top of the blue corn tortillas with queso de cabra to accentuate a seafood dish like no other.A must try, Barrio’s famous Cochinita Pibil – 12 hour slow roasted pork with achiote rojo. Rightfully so, Barrio is famous for this dish.  Finally, visit the restroom and thank the “power to be” for this “hot” little restaurant.

 Breadfruit

Craving an urban eatery like New York or San Francisco? Step into this quaint little restaurant in Downtown Phoenix.  This Jamaican dining experience is innovative using ingredients locally grown organic produce and naturally raised meats. Need I say more?  From Passion fruit daiquiri to my favorite carrot juice with organic carrots, coconut milk, vanilla and a pinch of nutmeg. It’s like tasting Christmas.  If you want more alcohol content try the assorted rum tasting.  Crispy mango fish rolls with red pepper calyso sauce adds a little kick to them but very flavorful. Appleton Rum Sea Scallops Grand, were not so grand. However, Jerk Prawns off the Grill is off the charts. Seasoned with spicy jerk rub and grilled over pimento wood. Great taste.  Sustainable, fresh, organic…

 Gallo Blanco

This hip eatery, located at the Clarendon Hotel on 3rd Avenue and Clarendon, has magnificently captured the street culture of Mexico.  Although one may think the food is unassuming, the food is down to earth and very clever.  Taqueria Cochinita made from local pork and marinated slow braised in achiote is far from a conventional taco.  Carne Asada Beef Torta grilled ribeye w/avocado and charred tomato salsa benefits our mouths as well as the community by using local meats & produce.  Chicken Chilaquiles w/queso Oaxaca & green chile sauce topped w/sunny side up egg is a much appreciated regional southwest influence.  Guacamole citrus spices & cotija is far from simple in flavor.  This cafe prides itself on innovative, regional southwest foods. They have nailed it. Gallo has taken “Old School” to a “Hipper” “New School” experience.
